Converting Your Recumbent with an E-BikeKit

Thinking about an electric assist for your recumbent trike or bike?

A recumbent bike or trike, is great for commuting or simply for recreation; however, if you want to go for an electric conversion of your recumbent, then an advanced system from our E-BikeKit site is the way to go. Sure, you can purchase a brand new electric recumbent trike, but if you want to save and already have a perfectly useful recumbent you already love, a kit is your best bet.

Take it from an E-Bike Kit customer, Kurt. He took his traditional Sun EX 3 recumbent trike and powered it up with a

conversion kit—here it from him:

"My name is Kurt Traylor and I'm writing just to tell you a little of my story and to tell you how happy I am with my e-bike conversion that I had installed on my Sun EX 3 recumbent trike.

I'm now 68 years old and almost 30 years ago I was struck by a train while operating a skid loader at work.  But that's a whole different story I'll not go into now, just suffice it to say that I suffered debilitating injuries that changed my life forever.  6 months in the hospital (over 2 in a coma), 2+ years of out-patient therapies, and a VERY supportive wife and family all have been instrumental in getting me where I am today.

Before the accident, I wouldn't say that I was an avid cyclist, but more than just occasional.

The last 2 or 3 months of my hospital stay my brother-in-law came to visit me regularly and at one of those visits we made a pact that we would run a marathon together when I recovered.  But my head injury affected my balance and I wasn't able to walk or even stand without assistance (still can't) so that wasn't going to happen.  I kept thinking to myself that I could ride a three wheeled bike, though  So I made the progression from a standard adult trike to a semi-recumbent 3 speed trike to a 21 speed fully recumbent trike.  That last one worked great and after a couple years I was up to 20-30 mile trips and had my sights set on a century bike tour.  A hundred miles in one day on a bike would be comparable to running a marathon so the conversation was back on.  So about 6 or 7 years after my accident my brother in law and I (and about 1000 other people) rode in a 100 mile tour.  It took me over 11 hours but  wasn't last, and I DID IT!

Since then I continued riding mostly by myself on 5-10 mile trips around home.  But as I aged, those trips became less frequent - that is until this spring when I had Smitty's Bike Shop in Piqua, OH  install an e bike conversion.  Now I'm riding 10-15 miles 4-6 times a week and loving it!  Using the pedal assist option I travel about 4 mph faster then before and I no longer have to worry about hills or wind.  And the exercise is doing wonders for my physical and mental health.

I'm a very satisfied customer."

Some reasons you might consider an electric assist:

  1. you or your partner may need help keeping up with others
  2. you would like some help on the hills
  3. you commute to work and don’t want to arrive hot and sweaty
  4. you worry about not having enough stamina to get back home
